EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
